How to Build a Beloved Brand in a Disliked Industry

Success stories and strategy presentations have a problem: they often showcase such perfect stories and efficient solutions that, well… there’s this nagging feeling that someone forgot to mention something, and everything seems to have happened in a fantasy world. That’s why it’s refreshing to feel a cold gust of reality on the first day of The Gathering 2024, an event that has been held for eleven years in the mountains of Banff, Canada.

The Gathering is an immersion into the world of brands, not only from a branding or advertising perspective but also focusing on corporate culture, purpose, and connection with their audiences. This year, the speakers include brand leaders from companies as diverse as Levi’s, Call of Duty, Barbie, McDonald’s, NFL, Coca Cola, Diageo, Pfizer, and Paramount, alongside startups, fintechs, and NGOs.

The event environment is designed for participants to share their learnings and challenges and address real issues. On this first day, one of the presentations that caught my attention the most was by Nic Beique, founder and CEO of Helcim, a payment company operating in the U.S. and Canada.
